The College will strive to ensure our governance complies with the highest standards, in line with our Objects. Below is an overview of how our structure works.

Honorary Founding President

Prof Nairn Wilson CBE FFGDP(UK)

Nairn Wilson is a Past President of the British Dental Association and Emeritus Professor of Dentistry at King’s College London, where he was Professor of Restorative Dentistry, Dean and Head of the College’s Dental Institute (2001-12), and Deputy Vice Principal (Health) (2009-12).

His other positions have included Editor of the Journal of Dentistry (1986-2000), Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (1995-98), President of the General Dental Council (1999-2003), co-chair of the Forum of European Heads and Deans of Dental Schools (2007-12), and Editor of the FGDP(UK) Primary Dental Journal (2012-2017).

Nairn’s interests include healthcare regulation, international trends in dental education, and future developments in the clinical practice of dentistry. He continues to contribute to the dental literature, while serving as patron or trustee of various dental charities. He was appointed CBE in 2004 for services to dentistry and healthcare regulation.

College Council

The College plans to convene a Council, providing leadership and support for the dental professions that the College serves in fulfilling its mission.

It is planned that the College Council will include regional representation, and for the professions served.

Before transfer of FGDP(UK) in July 2021, the Trustees are consulting closely with the Faculty Board of FGDP(UK) on the development of the College’s work and on all professional matters.

The Trustees are accountable for the running of the organisation, discharging its legal and regulatory duties and scrutinising performance.

The Trustees of the College of General Dentistry have been mandated by the elected Board of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) to lead the formation of the new College.

Advisory Strategy Group

The interests of patients will always come first. In developing strategies to ensure that the needs and expectations of patients are met, the new College plans to fully understand trends in the pattern and levels of oral and dental disease, to listen to patients, and to develop and promote the acquisition of new knowledge and skills by its members so that they may be applied in a timely, effective manner. In pursuing the best interests of patients, the College will encourage and promote systems of healthcare provision which reflects the wishes of patients and the public, address health inequalities and make best possible use of available funding. Ways need to be found for NHS and private dentistry to have complementary roles in improving and maintaining oral health and which allow the business of dentistry to thrive and develop in a fast moving biomedical science environment.
