Become a Student Member

Student Membership is for you if you are studying in the UK for a BDS or any other undergraduate dental qualification or traineeship.

By joining the College, you are demonstrating to your peers and future employers that you are committed to upholding the highest standards of practice for your patients, to life-long learning and to enhanced career progression.

We offer two levels of membership for students

Student Affiliate >

Our Student Affiliate level welcomes you into our professional community at the start of your career journey and demonstrates your commitment to your profession and to your future.

Membership fee: FREE

Student Member >

As a Student Member, you are demonstrating that you are committed to achieving your very best for the benefit of your patients.

Evidence-based standards and guidance at your fingertips: as a Student Member you can download our standards and guidance to your devices, accessing search, text-select and print functionality whenever you need it.

Raise your profile: you will have your own personal profile page on our searchable Member Register, enhancing your professional recognition and reflecting the progression of your skills and knowledge as your career develops.

Keep updated on the latest evidence: enjoy free online access to the latest clinical articles and editorials in our peer-reviewed publication Primary Dental Journal, as well as the PDJ archive with over 1,400 downloadable articles, a great study resource.

How to complete our membership application form

STEP 1: What dental role are you studying for? >

Go straight to the section titled ‘Your dental role‘ and select the role for which you are training from the drop down menu. Click ‘NEXT’.

STEP 2: Which level of membership do you want? >

Head to the ‘Your Membership‘ section and select your preferred membership level. Choose from Student Affiliate (free) or Student Member (£11), which unlocks online access to the Primary Dental Journal and our online learning hub.

Click ‘NEXT’.

STEP 3: Add your personal details >

Complete the ‘Personal details‘ section, ensuring you include your name, address with postcode and telephone number. You can specify the name you prefer to be addressed by if you wish.

STEP 4: Your study details >

Add the dental school you’re studying at and your expected date of graduation*.

Click ‘NEXT’.

*Once you graduate and register with the GDC, you can apply to become an Associate Member of the College and enrol on our Certified Membership Scheme to start on your Career Pathway with structured one-to-one career support.

STEP 5: Confirm your application >

And finally, confirm your application details. If you’re applying to become a Student Member, you will need to make the £11 payment.

After you submit your form, you will receive an email from the College asking you to verify your university email address. Please check your junk box if you don’t receive the email within a few days.

Once verified, you are a member of the College of General Dentistry – welcome!

Joining the College as a student is only the start of your journey with us. As you gain further clinical and professional experience, skills and knowledge, you can upgrade your College membership to demonstrate your professional standing.

When you have graduated and registered with the General Dental Council (GDC), you are eligible to become an Associate Member of the College and can enrol on our Certified Membership scheme to access our Career Pathways and structured, one-to-one mentorship and career support with a trained Facilitator.

If you join or transfer to Associate Membership within your first year of registration, you are eligible for a reduced fee for your first year of College membership.
