This is the first webinar in a CGDent two-part series that explores the benefits that Clinical Dental Technicians can provide with Domiciliary Denture Care, particularly with an ageing demographic where mobility issues and additional assistance may be deciding factors when opting for denture treatment.

Speakers Mike Brindle and Caroline Persaud, both Clinical Dental Technicians, examine the role of Clinical Dental Technicians in the delivery of Domiciliary denture care, best practice and the benefits for patients.

CGDent Midlands Study Club for Early Career GDPs

Tuesday 4 April 2023, 6.30pm, Solihull

Session topic: difficult extractions and managing medically compromised patients in general practice

The CGDent Midlands study club for Early Career GDPs, aims to share expertise, experience and knowledge as well as encouraging discussion on a diverse range of topics within dentistry.

Sessions take place every two months, and this session is on the topic of difficult extractions and managing medically compromised patients in general practice.

The case-based discussion is limited to 12 people so sign up to avoid missing out! This is an opportunity to bring your most difficult cases and learn tips and tricks on how to better manage them in the future. We will ask you to provide some details of a challenging extraction case or where you have managed a medically compromised patient, to facilitate discussion.

The guest moderator will be Dr Sukhi Atthi FCGDent. Dr Atthi is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and a Tier II Oral Surgeon for North Midlands, with special interests in Sedation, MOS and Orthodontics. He will be available to help discuss and treatment plan those cases that you may want advice on. You will be not only developing your practice but also providing the best care to your patients.

The study club is open to GDPs who have completed Foundation Training or PLVE between 2017-2022.

Mentoring in implant dentistry

Developed in conjunction with the Association of Dental Implantology, the Mentoring in Implant Dentistry: Good Practice Guidelines were published by the College in 2022. The guidelines describe the nature of mentoring which should be undertaken in order to safely carry out implant dentistry following completion of an appropriate training course.

This CGDent-hosted webinar helps both mentors and mentees in Implant Dentistry understand what the new guidelines are and why they were developed, and it provides an insight into what is expected from each other during the mentoring process.

You will be not only developing your practice but also providing the best care to your patients.

Advanced restorative study day

Advanced restorative study day
delivered by Stride Dental Academy in support of CGDent in Cymru/Wales

Stride Dental Academy, Bangor, North Wales, LL57 4FH (close to the A55 North Wales Expressway)

The Advanced Restorative Study Day has been rescheduled from 25 November 2022 to 17 February 2023.

This Advanced Restorative Study Day, held in support of CGDent in Cymru/Wales, provided an overview to General Dental Practitioners on structuring treatment plans into manageable phases, through the periodic implementation of different treatment modalities. It gave participants an update on restorative dentistry and dental implants, including perio, dentures, ortho, treating toothwear, treatment planning, CBCT use, and an insight into how Specialists treat Hypodontia patients. 

Members of the College of General Dentistry receive a discount on the study day fee.

Programme

The day included six lectures delivered by expert speakers Mike Lloyd Hughes and Karun Dewan, plus a Q&A session. The topics covered were:

  • Stabilisation and treatment planning phases

  • Back to basics: how to make good dentures, and when to use implant retained overdentures
  • Perio, ortho, restorative and implants: combination approach for long term stability
  • Restorative management of patients with tooth surface loss
  • Endodontic vs implant: what is your hierarchy in the decision making process?
  • Multidisciplinary management of hypodontia patients: care pathway

Supporting staff through menopause

In 2022, the British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) published a menopause policy and advice outlining the challenges faced by menopausal women in the workplace, with suggestions for how employers can support menopausal employees. 

In the UK, 99% of dental nurses, 96% of orthodontic therapists, 94% of dental hygienists,  92% of dental therapists, 52% of dentists and 27% of dental technicians are female – 78% of the regulated dental profession as a whole.

This CGDent-hosted webinar will explore the BADN’s recent menopause policy and consider the ways menopausal staff can be supported in the workplace.
