The College of General Dentistry is the only professional body dedicated to general dental practice in the UK. We set standards and support careers for the whole dental team.
The CGDent NextGen Leadership Workshop is a motivational day of talks, workshops and discussion for dental students, Foundation Dentists and Foundation Dental Therapists specially designed to help you boost-start your career in dentistry. It takes place on Saturday 25 November 2023 in Manchester.

What does the Workshop cover?
What makes an effective leader? Why are leadership skills so important for your career in dentistry? What skills do you already have and how can you build on them?
The NextGen Leadership Workshop is a unique opportunity for you to gain an insight into what it takes to be an effective leader, to understand your existing leadership qualities and how you can develop them.
Through talks, workshop and discussion, you will gain insights into leadership from a team of leaders in the dental profession. You will take part in small-group workshops, and through a process of reflection and self-insight, you’ll start to develop a personal development plan focusing on enhancing your leadership skills.
Taking part in this exclusive event for dental students and Foundation Dentists, qualifies you to become a NextGen Ambassador for the College, acting as the voice of the College within your community.

Will it cost me anything?
We know that as a student or recent graduate you need to manage your finances very carefully, so we’ve ensured the NextGen Leadership Workshop is accessible for you.
The Workshop is completely free to attend. We will provide you with lunch and refreshments throughout the day and we’ll reimburse your travel costs up to the value of £50.
Making an application
The inaugural NextGen Leadership Workshop is open to students at selected dental schools: Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, UCLan, and Foundation Dentists and Foundation Dental Therapists in the North West Region. You are eligible to attend if you are a:
- student in years 3, 4 and 5 of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery
- student in years 2 and 3 of the BSc or DipHE Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy
- student in years 2 and 3 of BSc Clinical Dental Technology
- student in years 2 and 3 of BSc Dental Studies
- Foundation Dentist or Foundation Dental Therapist in the North West region
The Workshop is open to members of the College and non-members. If you choose to become a NextGen Ambassador, we ask that you join the College as a member. Student Membership is £11 and Associate Membership is £42 during your first year of registration.

Speaker and facilitator bios
Mr Phillip Brown FCGDent
Mr Phillip Brown is a full time Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Liverpool School of Dentistry and a General Dental Practitioner working part time in primary care who graduated with a Degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery at Liverpool in 2007. He received a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology from the University of Central Lancashire in 2014 and a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching and Learning from Edge Hill University in 2017. He has continued with his interest in Education by completing a Master of Arts in Academic Practice at the University of Liverpool. In addition to his academic work, Phill holds a variety of governance roles at the University of Liverpool. Prior to his academic career, Phill was a full time General Dental Practitioner and practice owner/provider in an NHS primary care setting. Phill is a Facilitator for CGDent’s Certified Membership scheme and elected member and Honorary Secretary of Wirral Local Dental Committee.
Poppy Dunton
An Associate Member of the College of General Dentistry, Poppy is also enrolled on our Certified Membership Scheme and is a member of the Board of the College’s Faculty of Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy. Poppy is a Dental Therapist and Business Operations Manager in a private practice in Northamptonshire, and holds a Level 6 Employment Law and ILM Level 5 in Leadership and Management. Poppy graduated from Cardiff University with a Diploma of Higher Education in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene in 2011, winning the Johnson and Johnson Clinical Excellence Prize and was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Periodontics for dental therapists from Perio School EduQual in 2022.
Dr Roshni Karia MCGDent
Roshni Karia MCGDent qualified from King’s College London in 2010 and works in London as an associate dentist in general dental practice. After developing a special interest in periodontics, she completed an enhanced two-year postgraduate study programme and is now also a clinical tutor in periodontology at King’s College London. She was elected the youngest ever Vice Dean of FGDP in 2019 and in 2020 was a contributor to the joint FGDP-CGDent guidance Implications of COVID-19 for the safe management of general dental practice. Roshni has been the College’s representative in national policy fora on children’s oral health improvement and on periodontics, has served on its Careers and Training Committee and Career Pathways Programme Board, and served as Vice President from 2021-22.
Dr Abhi Pal FCGDent
Dr Abhi Pal FCGDent is the first elected President of the College of General Dentistry. Dr Pal qualified in 1987 with honours and distinction from Guy’s Hospital, London, and has worked in general dental practice ever since, joining The University Dental and Implant Centre, a mixed NHS and private practice in Edgbaston of which he is Principal, in 1991. He is Editor of FGDP’s Training Standards in Implant Dentistry and Co-Editor of CGDent’s Mentoring in Implant Dentistry: Good Practice Guidelines.
Sir Nairn Wilson CBE FCGDent
Sir Nairn Wilson CBE FCGDent was Honorary Founding President of the College of General Dentistry, and now President Emeritus.
A Patron of the Dental Wellness Trust, he is a Past President of the British Dental Association and Emeritus Professor of Dentistry at King’s College London, where he was Professor of Restorative Dentistry, Dean and Head of the College’s Dental Institute, and Deputy Vice Principal for Health. His many other positions have included Dean of Manchester University Dental Hospital and subsequently Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester, Editor of the Journal of Dentistry, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, President of the General Dental Council, Chair of the Council of Deans and Heads of Dental Schools (now the Dental Schools Council) and co-chair of the Forum of European Heads and Deans of Dental Schools.
He was made Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2004 for services to dentistry and healthcare regulation and appointed Knight Bachelor in King Charles III’s first Birthday Honours List.
What is the role of NextGen Ambassador?
We hope that by taking part in the NextGen Leadership Workshop you will be inspired to become a NextGen Ambassador for the College. As a NextGen Ambassador you are the voice of the College within your community, and importantly, you are the voice of your generation within the College. Your role is to raise awareness of the College, promote the benefits of membership, as well as sharing your concerns about your future career with the College, helping us advance our mission.
