The second College of General Dentistry Fellows’ Winter Reception took place on the evening of Thursday 25 January 2024. We returned to the historic Cutlers’ Hall in London, where this year’s Fellows’ Summer Reception took place.
The event included welcome addresses by the President and Chair of the College, the admission of new Fellows, and presentations of College-awarded diplomas and certificates.
An opportunity to network with peers, as well as to meet College Trustees, Council members and staff, the reception was open to all Fellows and Associate Fellows, those due to be presented with a diploma or certificate, and those enrolled in Certified Membership.
Priority for tickets was given to new Fellows, Diplomates/Certificants and individuals who applied for the Fellows’ Summer Reception but were unable to be accommodated.
Retired Fellows attending the Fellows’ Reception were also encouraged to attend the 1992 Circle gathering, which took place in the same venue immediately prior to the reception.

The third gathering of the College’s ‘1992 Circle’ took place on the afternoon of Thursday 25 January 2024. We returned to the historic Cutlers’ Hall in London.
All those who are fully retired from practice and were a Fellow of the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK), or are or were a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry, are eligible to join the Circle and to attend its periodical gatherings.
There is no charge to become a member of the Circle or to attend its gatherings.

The 1992 Circle is named in honour of the year the Faculty of General Dental Practice was founded, a key moment which brought together the members of the College of General Dental Practitioners (UK) and of the Advisory Board in General Dental Practice of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, with the shared ambition to create an independent College over time. It aims to bring together, and recognise, those whose vision put the general dental profession in the UK on that journey, and those whose ongoing commitment carried this through to the establishment of the College of General Dentistry.

This webinar with Future Frontline, aimed to raise awareness of different careers within general dentistry and to educate future dental professionals about working in the dental profession. The CGDent Scotland Study Day 2023 featured Professor Shamir Mehta FCGDent and Subir Banerji FCGDent, both Directors of the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King’s College London, who presented the current evidence on toothwear, provided a guide to managing tooth wear in general dental practice, and illustrate the clinical techniques applied in the rehabilitation of the worn dentition.
Professor Jason Leitch CBE FCGDent delivered the annual Caldwell Memorial Lecture on Recovering from a Pandemic: NHS Scotland’s legacy post-COVID.
Shamir Mehta is a Professor and Course Lead for the MSc in Restorative Dentistry at the College of Medicine and Dentistry and Ulster University, Senior Clinical Teacher and Director of the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King’s College London, and Visiting Professor and PhD supervisor at Radboud University, where he is part of the Radboud Tooth Wear Project.
Subir Banerji is the Programme Director of the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry, and PhD supervisor, at King’s College London, co-author of books including Practical Procedures in the Management of Tooth Wear and Practical Procedures in Aesthetic Dentistry, and a general dental practitioner in private practice in Ealing.
Professor Mehta and Dr Banerji are also Guest Editors for two issues of the College’s Primary Dental Journal on the theme of Aesthetic Dentistry. Part One was recently distributed to College members, and Part Two will be published in September 2023.
Jason Leitch is the National Clinical Director for Scotland, and became a popular and well-known figure to broadcast media audiences throughout the UK for the clarity of his communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. A graduate of Glasgow Dental School, he holds a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard and a PhD from the University of Glasgow, and is a CGDent Ambassador.
The study day could be attended in person or virtually.
For in-person attendees, there was free parking and registration opened at 8am with tea, coffee and breakfast rolls available. Six hours of CPD lectures took place across the day, with two coffee breaks, a three-course lunch, and a drinks reception afterwards. Delegates were also encouraged to visit the accompanying 30-stand trade exhibition.

Dental teams across the country face great challenges in providing accessible support for their patients and communities. The College of General Dentistry works to support the whole dental team in addressing these challenges, for the benefit of the nation’s oral health.
We have been working with Haleon, a global leader in consumer health with brands like Sensodyne or Corsodyl trusted by millions of patients, to conduct a survey to better understand the role preventative oral care plays in routine dental appointments.
The study, featuring insights from dental health professionals and patients, highlights the importance of preventative oral care, whilst also pointing to opportunities for its enhancement, supported by the clinical team, across the UK.

This CGDent Midlands Study Evening will discuss the aetiologies of tooth wear including stress and bruxism and the influence that occlusion has on bruxism and wear.
The treatment modalities that will be shown include occlusal splint therapy, composite restorations to improve occlusion and ceramic partial and full mouth reconstructions dealing with treatment protocols for design and planning from diagnostic waxing to planning occlusal planes and OVD.
Specific emphasis will be placed on understanding the five principles of occlusion and establishing Class 3 leverage when restoring.

Professor Paul TiptonFCGDent
Professor Paul Tipton is an internationally acclaimed Specialist in Prosthodontics who has worked in private practice for more than 30 years. He is the founder of Tipton Training, one of the UK’s leading private dental training academies and the author of over one 100 scientific articles for the dental press. He gained his Master’s Degree in 1989 from the Eastman Dental Hospital and London University and started teaching at the University of Manchester’s MSc in Restorative Dentistry. He is now Professor of Restorative and Cosmetic Dentistry at the City of London Dental School.
His private dental training academy, Tipton Training, was founded in 1991 and to date over 4000 dentists have completed a one year course at the Academy.
In 1992, Prof Tipton was awarded an honorary Diploma in General Dental Practice from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and was appointed a member of the British Dental Association’s Independent Practice Committee. In 1999, he was certified as a Specialist in Prosthodontics by the General Dental Council.
Prof Tipton is on the editorial board of Private Dentistry Magazine, The Journal of Indian Prosthodontics Society and Implant Dentistry and is a medical writer and part of the advisory board at Expert Beauty Magazine and ‘Woman’s’ magazine. He was a founding member and on the Board of Directors of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry and the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is the past president of the British Academy of Implant Dentistry and is currently the President of the British Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the College and was recently elected Fellow of the International Academy of dental Facial Esthetics (IADFE) and Associate Fellow of the University of Warwick.
The CGDent Midlands study club for Early Career GDPs, aims to share expertise, experience and knowledge as well as encouraging discussion on a diverse range of topics within dentistry.
Sessions take place every two months, and this session was on the topic of hands-on photography and consent.
This session aims to provide an overview of the use of photography and consent in routine practice and how best to take easy and reproducible pictures, for patients and portfolio building. Standard intraoral photos and more aesthetic options will be covered with a short presentation, demo and participant practice.
This session will be led by Alice Cheadle. Alice is a Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry (Fixed & Removable Prosthodontics) at the University of Birmingham. She has an interest in all things digital, and alongside her teaching and clinical roles is completing a PhD in 3D printing. Her interest in photography within dentistry developed when working in general practice, realising the importance of photographs for treatment planning, consent and self-improvement.

Aimed at all members of the dental team, this lecture highlighted key stages of the complaint-handling process, and discussed worked examples using real patient complaints.
It was delivered by Dr George Wright MCGDent, Deputy Dental Director of Dental Protection and Chief Examiner at the Faculty of Forensic and Legal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians. After qualifying from the University of Sheffield and completing Foundation Training, Dr Wright moved straight into NHS general dental practice, later becoming a Foundation Trainer in South Yorkshire, and Training Programme Director for Performer List Validation by Experience in Yorkshire and the Humber. He joined Dental Protection part-time in 2016, became a full-time Dento-legal Consultant in 2018, and in 2020 was appointed Senior Dental Educator in Risk Prevention, and subsequently Deputy Dental Director. He continues to work clinically within a family-friendly private dental practice.

This lecture offered delegates up-to-date knowledge in order to sustain life when a medical emergency occurs in general dental practice.
It was delivered by Dr Sukhvinder Singh Atthi FCGDent, a lecturer in oral surgery at the University of Birmingham, and Tier II-accredited Oral Surgeon who treats nervous minor oral surgery patients with intravenous sedation. With 25 years’ experience working as an associate then principal dentist in general dental practice, he has also worked part-time in the Community Dental Service and spent part of his vocational training working in oral maxillofacial surgery units. He holds Master’s degrees in both Orthodontics and Oral Surgery, Postgraduate Certificates in Conscious Sedation, Leadership & Management and Learning & Teaching in Higher Education, the Diploma of Fellowship and Certificates in both Minor Oral Surgery and Dental Practice Appraisal from the FGDP(UK), and is qualified to ILM Level 5 in Coaching and Mentoring in Management. He is a Fellow of the College of General Dentistry and Higher Education Academy, an experienced dental trainer, and has been a board member of CGDent West Midlands (previously the FGDP West Midlands Division) since 2013.
