The Advanced Orthodontics course is a comprehensive, 120-credit, Level 7 programme leading to the award of the CGDent Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Care Orthodontics.
Delivered by IAS Academy, it is designed to give General Dental Practitioners the skills and knowledge needed to treat more complex malocclusions, including extraction cases, taking them up to just below specialist training level. It covers all appliance systems – fixed functional, aligners, lingual and Inman – and includes both the theory and practical aspects of orthodontic care.
In addition to lectures, students will discuss multiple new cases, participate in hands-on practical sessions and receive one-to-one mentoring by specialists for ten treated cases. The syllabus, which is delivered across six 3-4 day training blocks as well as weekly online planning discussions, includes:

This training block is specifically for candidates accepted onto the 2026-28 cohort of the diploma course and is limited to 12 places. To ensure enough case-flow and experience, the course is recommended for dentists who have treated at least ten fixed cases, are treating a minimum of ten orthodontic cases per annum, and are familiar with using fixed appliances.

Dr Nick Robson
Dr Nick Robson qualified with honours in Dentistry from Cardiff University in 2015. Pursuing his passion for root canal treatment, he achieved an MSc in Endodontology with Distinction at the University of Central Lancashire in 2024.
Alongside clinical practice, Nick assists with endodontic teaching at UCLan School of Dentistry and leads research exploring the efficacy of calcium silicate root canal sealers. He is dedicated to using advanced endodontic techniques to deliver predictable, minimally invasive care.
Dr Vishal Klaire
Dr Vishal Klaire graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2011 and spent several years in NHS practice, where his interest in endodontics first developed. He later undertook postgraduate studies in Endodontics and transitioned to private practice in 2019, focusing exclusively on this specialty.
Vishal combines clinical expertise with patient-centred care, investing in advanced tools such as a portable dental microscope to deliver precision treatment. He is passionate about making complex procedures more comfortable and accessible for patients.

This session will explore contemporary approaches to caries management and restorative dentistry, focusing on practical strategies that can be applied in everyday general practice. The first hour will cover modern caries diagnosis, risk-based management, and minimally invasive techniques, alongside direct restorative principles to improve the predictability and longevity of composite restorations. There will also be a focus on when to move beyond direct restorations, with an introduction to indirect options such as inlays and onlays, including case selection, preparation design, and material considerations.
The second half of the evening will be dedicated to interactive, case-based discussions. Delegates are encouraged to bring their own cases to explore treatment planning options, share experiences, and gain insights in a supportive, peer-led environment.

Dr Kam Panesar qualified at the University of Birmingham in 2007 and holds a Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the University of Manchester (2011) and a Master’s degree in Restorative Dentistry from the University of Leeds (2016). She provides a wide range of treatments, from Invisalign and cosmetic procedures to complex restorative and endodontic cases, and provides intravenous sedation, which allows nervous patients to complete treatment comfortably.
Dr Aron Kandola
Since qualifying from the University of Bristol in 2017, Dr Aron Kandola has developed a special interest in cosmetic and general dentistry, as well as facial aesthetics. Dr Kandola holds a postgraduate diploma in restorative and aesthetic dentistry and a postgraduate certificate in primary care dentistry. She is an Invisalign Comprehensive Provider and a certified provider of Obagi medical-grade skincare. Dr Kandola is passionate about professional development and has mentored younger dentists and associates, helping them refine their skills and grow in confidence.

The GC composite layering course provides in-depth guidance on the complete process of restoring teeth using contemporary composite layering techniques and materials. Through hands-on sessions, supported by lectures, demos and one-to-one training, participants will gain an enhanced understanding of the science and protocols which will enable them to practice restorative dentistry with increased confidence, for the benefit of patients.

Using a detailed layering technique with only inside and outside shades in a Class IV

Dr Simone Moretto
Dr Moretto graduated in Dentistry from State University of Campinas in Brazil, going on to become a Specialist, Master and PhD in Restorative Dentistry at the Sao Paulo University, Brazil. as a research at BIOMAT, the Biomaterials Research group of the Department of Oral Health Sciences, KU Leuven (University of Leuven), Belgium, she developed a sound scientific background with papers published in peer reviewed journals and presentations at several International Congresses. Following her time at the University of Leuven, she taught as an Associate Professor in Brazil and then lectured in modern dentistry internationally. Since 2014, she has worked GC Europe as a Training Manager.
A fully funded place on the composite layering course is offered to successful candidates in the CGDent and GC Award for Foundation Trainees, which is open to Dentists and Dental Therapists who qualified in the UK or Ireland in 2025 and are practising in the UK or Ireland, or who are undertaking Dental Foundation Training or Dental Vocational Training. The prize for successful candidates also includes hotel accommodation, international travel and subsistence.
To enter, eligible Dentists and Dental Therapists have to submit a restorative case they plan to treat, which involves more than one tooth, including at least one anterior tooth, and the use of composite to restore teeth.
The 2025/26 award is open to entries until Friday 20 February 2026.

Dr Simran Bains AssocFCGDent qualified from the University of Manchester in 2017. She has been awarded postgraduate diplomas in both restorative and aesthetic dentistry (CGDent) and occlusion and veneers, and has a special interest in cosmetic and restorative dentistry, Invisalign, and the treatment of nervous patients. Nationally recognised, Dr Bains has featured in the Dentistry Top 50 (2023–2025) and has won multiple awards, including Best Young Dentist Overall and Best Young Dentist Midlands at the Dentistry Awards 2024, as well as Best Young Dentist 2025 by Probe Magazine. Widely published in the British Dental Journal, Dentistry Magazine, and Young Dentist Magazine, she also serves as Director of Membership for the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

The 2026 College Medal, the College’s most prestigious honour, will be awarded to Dr Patricia Thomson FCGDent.
Reserved for no more than one recipient per year, the College Medal is awarded for exceptional service to the dental profession and its patients in a manner aligned with the values and mission of the College. Dr Thomson has received the award in recognition of her wholehearted commitment to the profession, and her longstanding service to CGDent and previously to the Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP), both nationally and in the west of Scotland.
Since graduating from Glasgow Dental School in 1983 until her retirement from practice this year, Dr Thomson amassed 43 years’ unbroken service as a general dental practitioner. Principal of a mixed NHS-and-private practice for over 30 years, she assisted the Vocational Dental Practitioners in her practice for over 20 of these, also nurturing the careers of many Dental Care Professionals, associate dentists and non-clinical staff. In recent years, she practised as a part-time associate dentist, and she continues to teach undergraduates as a part-time Clinical Teaching Fellow in the restorative department at the University of Glasgow.
Heavily involved for more than two decades in the highly active West of Scotland division of the former FGDP, she tutored numerous colleagues for entry exams for the Royal Colleges and presented teaching sessions on orthodontics to vocational trainees. Elected in 2016 to represent the West and North of Scotland on the national FGDP Board, she was re-elected in 2019 and transferred to the College Council when CGDent succeeded the FGDP.
In 2021, she led the establishment of CGDent Scotland to succeed the West of Scotland division, and has since continued her involvement both in the study groups and in planning the annual study days, which have been running since 1992 and now regularly attract over 400 colleagues.
She was appointed the first Chair of the College’s Regional Funding Panel and was elected Vice-President of the College in 2022. She served a second term as Vice-President in 2023-24, and was re-elected to the Council in 2024 before standing down in 2025 after completing the maximum permitted nine years’ service. She continues to represent the College as its nominee on the NHS Education for Scotland Dental Committee, a role she has held for many years.
With a longstanding interest in orthodontics, she spent three years on a part-time clinical attachment in Glasgow Dental School’s orthodontic department, training in fixed appliance therapy, and later completed an MSc in Primary Dental Care (Dental Science) with an interest in orthodontics, achieving a distinction.
She also holds the Diploma of Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (MJDF) and the Diploma of Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (MFDS), and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a Past President of the West of Scotland branch of the British Dental Association.
The presentation of the College Medal, to be made by the President of the College, Dr Roshni Karia, will be incorporated within the Fellows’ Summer Reception, and will take place in front of gathered Fellows and Associate Fellows of the College.
The Fellows’ Summer Reception is an opportunity for dental professionals to network with their peers, as well as to meet College Trustees and members of the College Council and Faculty Boards.

The 2026 College of General Dentistry Lecture will be delivered by Dr Catherine Rutland FCGDent.
The Ethical Shield: Protecting enamel, professional integrity and patient smiles will explore how dental professionals can continuously integrate ethical values into their working lives in order to provide patients with assurance and confidence in the care they receive.
This will be the second annual College Lecture, and will build on both Martin Kelleher’s inaugural College Lecture, Satisficing standards in dentistry, and on the rich legacy of Malcolm Pendlebury Lectures previously hosted by the Faculty of General Dental Practice UK (FGDP).
Catherine Rutland is Head of Clinical and Policy at Dentaid, representing the dental charity across the profession and engaging with MPs, public health teams and commissioners. She is also a Board Member of Dental Protection, which indemnifies and supports 70,000 dental professionals worldwide, and a Non-Executive Director and Council Member of the Medical Protection Society, which has a further 245,000 medical professional members in 40 countries. Part of the General Dental Council’s Dental Leadership Network, she is a Trustee of the Dentists’ Health Support Trust, which supports dentists facing mental health and addiction challenges, and was appointed a Trustee of the College of General Dentistry in 2026. She was previously Director of Policy and Clinical Affairs at the Association of Dental Groups, whose members work with over 22,000 registered dental professionals in treating over 10 million dental patients, and Clinical Director at Simplyhealth, including Denplan, where she chaired both the Clinical Governance Committee and the Denplan Excel Board.
After qualifying as a dentist in 1992 from the University of Leeds, where she achieved a Distinction in oral surgery, she spent two and a half years in secondary care as a House Officer in Leeds and Senior House Officer in Newcastle before moving into general dental practice. She completed Vocational Training in Sunderland and spent a year there as an associate GDP before practising in Reading for three years. From 2000-2019, she was Principal Dental Surgeon and a joint partner at a private dental practice in Thatcham, West Berkshire. She joined Denplan as a Dental Advisor in 2010, and was later promoted to Senior Dental Advisor, Head of Professional Support Services and Head Dental Officer before working there full-time from 2019. In 2013, she completed a Master’s degree in Medical Ethics and Law at King’s College London, writing her dissertation on whether both professional integrity and patient autonomy can be satisfied in fulfilling patients’ cosmetic dental desires. She became a Certified Member of the Institute of Risk Management in 2015 and was awarded a Chartered Management Institute Level 7 Certificate in Leadership Mentoring and Coaching in 2016. She became a Fellow of the College in 2023, and in 2024 was a keynote speaker at the CGDent Scotland Annual Study Day, the College’s largest annual CPD event, lecturing on ethical and legal considerations in the provision of aesthetic and cosmetic dental procedures.

Members of the 1992 Circle (i.e. all members of the College who are fully retired from practice) are invited, for their Summer 2026 gathering, to a lunch hosted by Sir Nairn Wilson CBE FCGDent.
It is anticipated that tickets will cost £35. Further details will be added here once available.
About the 1992 Circle
The 1992 Circle aims to foster continued close connections with and between our whole retired community, and comprises all College members who are fully retired from practice.
Named in honour of the year the FGDP(UK) was founded, it celebrates the vision of those who put the general dental profession in the UK on a journey towards independent collegiate status.
Bringing the benefit of our retired members’ experience to the work of the College today, the Circle promotes their continued standing in the profession and creates a sociable network of like-minded individuals.
There is no additional charge for membership of the 1992 Circle, and members receive special invitations to College events, as well as periodic updates from its Convenor, Sir Nairn Wilson CBE, and information on the events and activities of the Lindsay Society for the History of Dentistry.
All members of the College who are already fully retired from practice have now been enrolled in the 1992 Circle, and College members who are currently in practice will be enrolled once fully retired.
