College marks anniversary with free journal offer

The College is marking its second anniversary by offering dental professionals a free print copy of the Primary Dental Journal.

Primary Dental Journal (PDJ) is the College’s quarterly, peer-reviewed member publication. Featuring clinical articles, editorials and topical opinion, as well as updates from the College, the PDJ is a leading resource for general dental practitioners and dental care professionals working in primary care, and has as its Clinical Editor and Editor-in-Chief Igor Blum, Clinical Professor of Primary Dental Care & Advanced General Dental Practice at King’s College London.

Unique in its dedication to general dental practice, its general issues include a range of papers on a variety of topics of interest and relevance to the primary care dental team, and its themed issues explore subjects in depth and are guest edited by renowned experts in their field. Recent themed issues include Leadership and professionalism, Urgent dental care and COVID-19, Paediatric dentistry, Oral surgery, Digital dentistry and most recently Aesthetic dentistry part 1.

To mark the second anniversary of the College’s establishment, it is giving away 100 print copies of the next issue, Aesthetic dentistry part 2.

The issue is guest edited by Professor Shamir Mehta FCGDent and Dr Subir Banerji FCGDent. Professor Mehta is a Professor and Course Lead for the MSc in Restorative Dentistry at the College of Medicine and Dentistry and Ulster University, Senior Clinical Teacher and Director of the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry at King’s College London, and Visiting Professor and PhD supervisor at Radboud University. Dr Banerji is the Programme Director of the MSc in Aesthetic Dentistry and a PhD supervisor at King’s College London, co-author of Practical Procedures in the Management of Tooth Wear and Practical Procedures in Aesthetic Dentistry, and an Associate Professor in Prosthodontics at Melbourne Dental School. Professor Mehta and Dr Banerji are also leading the College’s upcoming study day on managing tooth wear in general dental practice.

Articles expected to feature in the upcoming issue include:

  • Adhesion to enamel and dentine: an update
  • The longevity of tooth-coloured materials used for restoration of tooth wear: an evidence-based approach
  • A survey of retention and support for anterior bounded saddles of removable partial dentures
  • Complications of toxins and fillers in facial aesthetics
  • Aesthetic management of tooth size discrepancies
  • Aesthetic management of incisors in children

Those wishing to receive a free print copy will need to sign up by Sunday 27 August 2023. Delivery of promotional copies should take place during October 2023, but in the event that the number of individuals participating exceeds the number of copies available, the next available issue may be sent instead.

Following Aesthetic Dentistry Part 2, anticipated issues include Dental trauma, General dentistry and Implant dentistry (tbc), and those wishing to receive these can either subscribe to the PDJ or join the College.

Membership of the College includes a comprehensive print, online and archive subscription which is otherwise available only to academic institutions. As well as having the latest print issue posted out every three months, this gives members searchable access to over 1,400 articles from 95 issues of Primary Dental Journal and its predecessor publications, including all the articles from Aesthetic Dentistry Part 1:

New PDJ online: Aesthetic dentistry, part 1

The latest edition of the Primary Dental Journal, the Aesthetic dentistry part 1 issue (vol.12, no.2), is now live online.

This issue is guest edited by two renowned experts in the field, Subir Banerji (Programme Director MSc Aesthetic dentistry, King’s College London) and Shamir Mehta (Professor of Aesthetic dentistry and Programme Lead, MSc Restorative and Aesthetic dentistry at CoMD/Ulster University).

In this part 1 issue, and the following part 2 issue, the Guest Editors have selected a range of topics pertinent to the whole team of dental professionals, including discussions on the “ideal” smile, clear aligners, and how digital dentistry can assist in aesthetic treatment planning. New PDJ online: Digital dentistry

The latest edition of the Primary Dental Journal, Digital Dentistry, is now live online.

Guest edited by Clinical Professor of Prosthodontics at NYU College of Dentistry USA, Ilser Turkyilmaz, the issue explores various techniques to offer even the most experienced dental professional the latest update on the evolution of technology and materials.

Professor Turkyilmaz clarifies, “Now, well into the age of digital dentistry, clinicians are constantly challenged to find the most modern, relevant material to provide the best quality of care to their patients and ease their labour-intensive workflows. The goal of this issue is to do exactly that, enrich the repertoire of current and new clinicians to help optimise patient care.”

The new edition of the Primary Dental Journal, The General Issue – part 1, is now online.

In contrast to themed editions of Primary Dental Journal that focus on one specific topic of interest to the primary dental care team, the General Issue features articles on a diverse range of pertinent and relevant subjects to readers. Due to the number of high quality papers submitted this year, we have split the issue into two editions, with Part 2 of the General Issue published in Summer 2022.

The PDJ Archive: a rich resource for members, with over 1,300 articles

The Primary Dental Journal Archive is now up and running, with access for CGDent members fully established.

The Primary Dental Journal (PDJ) is the College of General Dentistry’s quarterly peer-reviewed journal, and with its unique dedication to general dental practice, is widely recognised as a leading resource for all dental professionals working in primary care.

Three themed issues in each annual volume explore topics of interest and relevance to the primary care dental team, led by an invited Guest Editor who is a renowned expert in the field, with one ‘general issue’ per volume covering a wide range of topics.

Published by the Faculty of General Dental Practice until its transfer into the College earlier this year, PDJ was first issued in October 2012, and was preceded by Primary Dental Care.

As well as receiving quarterly printed copies of the latest issues of PDJ, College members now have exclusive online access not only to the full articles in the current issue, but to all past PDJ content and all Primary Dental Care content published this century, a rich resource of over 1,300 articles spanning 23 volumes and 88 issues.

Curated by our publishing partner, SAGE Publishing, the PDJ Archive is an invaluable research tool, offering a wide array of clinical papers of ongoing relevance to general dental care, as well as articles covering a range of professional topics which continue to be discussed and debated.

It offers members access to content which they may not have received in print at the point of publication, and for those who were longstanding members of the FGDP and may prefer to consult their library of print issues, the online search functionality will enable them to quickly identify where to find particular articles.

Members may be interested to note that the College is now co-producing a series of webinars that examine topics covered in recent and imminent issues of PDJ.
